Admissions FAQ for the CAA Summer Institute @ Music Mountain
July 30 - August 10, 2017
Q: Who is eligible to apply for the 2017 Summer Institute?
A: Talented classical and musical theater singers ages 16-22 will receive priority for admission. Exceptional younger singers may also be considered on a space-available basis. To ensure an individually tailored experience, the Institute will be limited to 18 participants.
Q: What is the application deadline?
A: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants requesting financial aid must apply prior to April 1st. The final application deadline for all participants is May 1st. Admitted singers will be notified no later than May 15th.
Q: What is the basis for admissions decisions?
A: Your audition, of course! You will submit a video audition to help us gauge your current level of vocal and dramatic preparation, as well as your potential for growth. You may also submit an optional personal statement outlining your artistic background, training, and interest in the Institute. In addition, you may choose to include a letter of recommendation from a teacher or coach with your application. Please refer to the application on the "Apply Now" page.
Q: What do I include in my audition video?
A: Please include two contrasting selections from the classical and/or musical theater repertoire, with live accompaniment. Make sure that the lighting and sound are as clear as possible, and that you dress professionally. Do your best to choose the pieces that you feel most comfortable with, and that are age and voice appropriate. After posting the video on YouTube, you will paste the link into your application. Be sure to set your YouTube video privacy settings to “Unlisted” so your video can only be viewed by those who have the direct link. Do not mark your video as “Private”, or we will not be able to view your audition. Additional information on posting videos to YouTube may be found HERE.
Q: Will I receive feedback on my audition?
A: One of our core beliefs is that each singer is special. We also believe in the importance of constructive expert feedback for young artists - even for those we may not be able to accept this year. Accordingly, we will provide a brief written evaluation of your audition regardless of our decision. This service is included in the $35 application fee.
Q: How much is tuition, and will financial aid be available?
A: Tuition for the 2017 Institute is $1,750. Need-based and merit-based scholarships may be extended to outstanding students.
Q: What about housing and meals?
A: You will stay on-campus at one of the residential houses at Music Mountain. The housing fee of $700 for eleven nights includes three delicious meals per day from a local farm-to-table caterer.
